The Spitfire
The episode opens with a rough looking man tending a small fire in a field. A unkempt young woman (who we soon realize is his daughter) brings an armload of twigs to the fire. The man backhands her and rebukes her for puting green twigs on the fire. She protests that the twigs were dry but doesn't press the issue and seems not to bothered by her father striking her. The man tells her to go and wet down some sacks to protect the wagon from the fire. As she does so he uses a flaming branch to set the dry grass alight. The fire begins to spread instantly. He explains to his daughter that burning over the land is good for it and he intends to make himself a nice spot there.
When the scene comes back Joe is putting the last of the fire out and coughing frequently. He comes over to the wagon and splashes water on his face and squats down on the ground beside the young women who he's tied up to the wagon. He tries, in vain, to explain why he had to shoot her father. He eventually gives up and unties her saying he can't leave her out in the world alone and so he'll take her home and see what can be done for her. Joe finishes untying her and helps her up. As soon as she's on her feet she kicks Joe hard in the shin and pushes him onto the ground. She takes off around the wagon threatening to kill him. Joe manages to catch up with her after dodging a bucket. She now has a scythe which she takes a swipe at Joe with. Is desperation Joe knocks her out and lays her on the ground.
In the next scene Joe rides up on Cooch leading two other mounts behind him. The girl (whose name Joe has discovered to be Willow) is tied up on one of them, awake and screaming threats at Joe. Joe dismounts and hitches the horses all the while trying to ignore Willow's threats. Drawn by the screaming, Ben, Adam, and Hoss come out of the house. Joe relates the whole sad tale to his pa who is angry at first but realizes Joe had to shoot the man.
At a distant ranch the Hoads (the family of Willow) ride up looking no more clean or friendly then Willow and her father have proved to be. The group is led but a rough old women named Grandma Hoad. The owner of the ranch tells them they are welcome to cross over his land. She inquires the way to Virginia City and asks the owner of the ranch if her son and grandaughter passed this way. He says they have and also says they camped on his land without asking and killed one of his stock for food. But he says he let them have it because they looked half starved. Grandma Hoad is obviously displeased with the ranch owners refusal to allow them camp on his land. One of the ranch hands, apparently fearing the situation is deteriorating, draws his gun. One of the Hoads quickly shoots him. The man says with his last breath that he wasn't going to shoot. Grandma Hoad beats the member of her party that shot the hand with the bull whip she carries with her.
Back at the Ponderosa Ben is doing the books and Joe is hauling water upstairs. After a couple trips Joe explains to pa that they need plenty of water because Willow is so dirty and adds that they'll have to soak her a good long time to get her clean. Upstairs Willow is locked in the closet screaming threats once again. Joe finishes filling the tub while a family friend, Mrs. O' Shaunassy is arranging bath things on the dresser. Joe is obviously fretting and he begs Mrs. O' Shaunassy to go easy on Willow. The hearty woman assures Joe she'll, "do it his way" and be gentle with her. Joe takes the mirror from the room so Willow can't break it and Hoss comes in with a contraption to keep Willow in the tub. *it's a large heavy wooden box with a square hole cut in the top* Joe looks confused but Mrs. O' Shaunassy seems to know how to use it. She shoos Joe and Hoss out. They stand in the door way with the door parted until O' Shaunassy opens the closet, when they hurridly slam the door shut. Joe and Hoss remain at the door listening to make sure Willow doesn't kill O' Shaunassy. They hear breaking glass and Willow screaming at O' Shaunassy to "give her back her britches" Joe start to freak out and paces a bit before returning to the door. There is a large splash and then silence. Joe starts to open the door and rush in but Hoss stops him. O'shaunassy assures Joe and Hoss that everything is going just fine. And we see that she has put the box over the tub effectivly keeping Willow in.>>>>>>To be Continued
